Historical seasons

Every player. Every at-bat. Their year.

Pick a season and the whole league is in the pool: stars, platoon bats, September call-ups. Each one is rated from what he actually did that year, and the games are played in that year’s baseball.

Rated from play-by-play, not a spreadsheet

Ratings come from every plate appearance Retrosheet recorded: strikeouts, walks, home runs, balls in play, split by the pitcher’s hand. Small samples are pulled toward average, so a hot April does not make a superstar. Home-park effects come out, so a hitter is not rated on his ballpark.

The era comes with them

Each season carries its own run environment: how often batters struck out, walked and homered that year, how often balls fell in, how deep starters went. A 1927 league plays like 1927, with contact, triples and complete games. A 2019 league plays like 2019.

Checked against what really happened

Before a season ships, the real schedule is replayed with the real rosters and compared with the real league: strikeout, walk and home-run rates, batting line and runs per game must all land within tight tolerances. Teams that were good in real life come out good in the replay.

  • 2019 and 1998 are free.
  • 2016, 2001, 1986 and 1927 are part of Premium.
  • 1927 is marked experimental: its records have no batted-ball detail, so part of the season’s shape is estimated.
